URBANLOOP : SMART AND SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY

THE URBANLOOP CONCEPT

  • Reduce size, increase frequency

Historically, public transport has relied on shared drivers and combustion engines. This allows for economies of scale by placing a large number of seats in a single unit (bus, train, tram). However, when there’s no longer a need for drivers, and with the high efficiency of electric motors, the paradigm shifts. We believe it’s time to break out of the box and let the seats escape to offer a much more fluid mobility service. It’s the principle of the hourglass: the finer the grain, the higher the flow rate. Urbanloop can transport up to 2,500 passengers per hour on a one-metre-wide track.

  • Electric capsules without batteries

The major challenges of the coming century are energy efficiency and material sustainability. By choosing to multiply vehicles within a transport infrastructure, Urbanloop must ensure system reliability and maintainability. This is why Urbanloop has made the bold choice of a very low-voltage power supply via the track, avoiding the use of batteries (which are heavy, costly, non-recyclable, and temperature-sensitive) and allowing for 24/7 availability. Without carrying their own energy, the vehicles are safer, lighter, and more reliable.

  • Dedicated track with guidance

To effectively compete with car use, a mobility service must offer shorter journey times. Urbanloop has thus chosen to use a dedicated track to ensure faster, safer travel. By providing safety and electrical power, the guidance system reduces the risk of accidents and facilitates platform access with greater precision. Highly focused on vehicle compactness, Urbanloop requires minimal land, the width of a pavement for a single track, and the width of one lane for a double track. This allows for the creation of green corridors efficiently served by public transport accessible to all, while sharing space with other forms of gentle mobility: walking, cycling. Urbanloop is quiet, emitting 63 dB at 50 km/h from 5 metres away, helping to calm cities. The compact and individual nature of the capsules reduces the energy needed for movement. Urbanloop can cover 1 kilometre in 1 minute.

This technology ensures safe and fast journeys, with a commercial speed of 30 km/h, while minimizing energy consumption.

The Urbanloop system is distinguished by exceptional energy efficiency, consuming less than 1 cent of electricity per kilometer traveled, a world record set in 2021. The lightness of its capsules allows for zero waiting time, with immediate departure upon entry into the system and direct travel to the destination, facilitated by an advanced bypass system.

Autonomous Capsules

Urbanloop's capsules operate without a driver, thanks to advanced automated piloting technologies. This innovation reduces operating costs related to payroll, provides a solution to the challenge of driver recruitment, while ensuring high precision and reliability in journeys. The capsules can operate continuously, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, offering maximum flexibility for users and ensuring a service that is always available, even during off-peak hours.

Battery-Free

Urbanloop’s capsules are powered by low-voltage direct current through the rail, eliminating the need for batteries. This innovation bypasses issues related to the management, replacement, and environmental impact of heavy batteries. By removing batteries, Urbanloop also ensures a significant reduction in the weight of the capsules, which enhances energy efficiency and allows for competitive speeds compared to private cars.

No Waiting and No Stops at Intermediate Stations

With an advanced bypass system, Urbanloop's capsules do not need to stop at intermediate stations. Each capsule follows a direct route to its destination, offering fast and personalised transport service. This innovation reduces waiting times to zero, optimises network efficiency, and enhances the user experience, making public transport as convenient and fast as using a private car.
