To address the issues of climate change adaptation and mitigation, new uses of public space are being trialled and implemented – and introducing major changes. More and more local authorities are keen to see calmer towns and cities and remodelling them as a result. This talk will look at a range of initiatives in France and Europe, in particular the ‘calmer cities, liveable neighbourhoods’ campaign (Ville apaisée, quartiers à vivre) organised by France’s club of cycle- and pedestrian-friendly towns and territories Club des villes et des territoires cyclables et marchables in partnership with Rue d’Avenir.
